We all should love spiders.
But most of us hate ’em.
We smash them.
We suck them in.
We even spray poison on them.
We see them as ugly, scary predators and just want to get rid of them.
Spiders have a really bad reputation.
It’s time to change that.
Because spiders are not the villains in our homes and gardens.
They are silent helpers.
They eat insects (including that despicable mosquitoes).
They protect crops.
They support ecosystems.
They feed birds, frogs, reptiles and small mammals.
They inspire science with their silk, venom and incredible biology.
And here is the wild part:
Scientists estimate that spiders collectively kill hundreds of millions of tons of prey every year.
That means they are one of nature’s most powerful pest control systems.
No invoice.
No chemicals.
No drama.
Just eight legs doing important work while we mostly complain about them.
Of course, nobody has to cuddle a spider.
But maybe we can stop treating every little house spider like an emergency.
Maybe we can put a glass over it, bring it outside and let it continue its work.
Because nearly all spiders are harmless to us.
And far more helpful than harmful.
So yes:
Love your friendly neighborhood spider.
Or at least let it live.
If this post made just one of you see spiders in a different light and stop killing them, I am already satisfied I wrote it.
It’s about time to change their reputation.
So it’s time to stop fearing them.
And start respecting them.
So here is my question:
Next time you see a spider at home, will it be the shoe… or the glass and freedom?
