Is AI about productivity… or about redesigning the company itself? 🤖

I’ve been diving into Jack Dorsey’s latest strategy for Block and it challenges one of the deepest assumptions in business.

Many companies are adding AI as a copilot.

Block is asking something much bigger:

What if AI replaces the hierarchy itself?

Instead of layers of management, they are building an Intelligence Layer powered by a “World Model” of the company and its customers.

This leads to a radically simplified structure with just three roles:

  1. Individual Contributors (ICs)
Act with full context from the system, not from managers.
  2. DRIs (Directly Responsible Individuals)
Own real problems and pull resources across the organization.
  3. Player-Coaches
Build and develop people without the constant alignment overhead.

The goal is simple but powerful:

Remove the layers that slow down information flow.

For over 2,000 years, organizations have relied on hierarchy to coordinate work.

For the first time, there might be a real alternative.

As Dorsey puts it:

“AI doesn’t augment your company. It reveals what your company actually is.”

So here’s the question:

If everyone had full context instantly… would you still need your org chart?

If you want to dive deeper into the full concept, here’s the original article from Jack Dorsey and Block:

It’s worth the read. Some ideas feel radical today, but could become standard faster than we expect.
